Today might be my birthday, but yesterday was when I received my main gift! I did a route that I’ve been wanting to get on for many years, but the difficulty and my own fears always put me off. Finally everything came together and I managed to climb “Anubis” XII/12 on the front face of The Comb on Ben Nevis’ NF. I tried the route on Wednesday, but after getting through the crazy roof, I fluffed it and took the ride, twice! Exhausted, I stripped the route and yesterday I returned for another go. After 3.5hrs on the steep face I eventually pulled onto the upper ledge and felt the weight of the world lift off my shoulders. The climbing on Anubis is not just outrageously steep and pumpy, it’s also home to some of the thinnest and most technical climbing I’ve done. Along with trying to find adequate protection and searching for the minuscule hooks, you have to keep your head together as the pitch is 40+meters long. Anubis is up there as one of the hardest winter routes I’ve done, worldwide! Hats off to @climbermacleod for having the vision to climb his summer E8 in winter and @daniarnold_alpinist for awesome ascent in 2016. It was awesome topping out on the summit plateau with @robbiephillips_ and managing to time it right to catch a breathtaking West Coast sun set over the snow topped highlands.
